In the reading, "From Formulating to Developing a Thesis" it is showing us how to make a strong and straight forward thesis. A thesis is "an assertion that academic that writer make at the beginning of what the write and the support with evidence throughout their essay" (99). There are three different models that were provided as a source of help to first formulating your thesis. Those three models are "Misinterpretations Model, Gap model, and modification model" (103). Misinterpretations Model explains that even though you might have explained and examination on topics X and Y as best of your ability, there are still information or thoughts about topic Z that may lead to a different idea than what you wanted your readers to see. Gap model explains that even though you explained topics X and Y, there is a missing importance of topic Z. Lastly, modification model explains that even if ideas X and Y strengthen other writers thoughts, ideas, etc., idea Z is used to strengthen those ideas. There are also key points that you want to focus on when your are trying to build context in your thesis. Those four steps are: "1. Establish that the topic of conversation, the issue, is current and relevant- that is on people's minds or should be. 2. Briefly summarize what others have to show that you are familiar with the topic or issue. 3. Explain what you see as your problem... etc. 4. State your thesis, suggesting that your view on the issue may present readers with something new to think about as it builds on and extends what others have argued" (105). The reading also has examples of different thesis's you can practice identifying and using these steps to eventually strengthen your writing.
Questions:
1. How effective is using these steps on other writers papers besides yours?
